Halifax to Wood’s Island

So, we arrived in Halifax on June 1st. A big moment for us, each hoping that this relatively unknown city would indeed deliver on all of the hopes and dreams that we have been building on for the last year and a half. No pressure Halifax!

We are now leaving on June 16th, just 2 short weeks later having purchased a house that we absolutely love, visited the school, checked out the future road routes that we will frequently travel, gathered a bit of a feel for the city, arranged a whole bunch of things with respect to our future life on land in Halifax, met and hung-out with some lovely people and generally had a really great time.

Now off we sail to the North. Just as the city of Halifax has exploded with lovely spring colours, just as the waterfront is bursting into life, just as it is finally comfortable (and hugely pleasant) to sit outside in the cockpit/park/deck/terraces even well after sundown. Just as the sweaters can come off and shorts/ t-shirts/ flip-flops come back out of the cupboards. Yes, now, we have chosen to go North to Newfoundland and Labrador in search of cold, fog and ice.

Our travel itinerary for the first step is as follows. 150nm from Halifax to St. Peter’s Gate, through the locks into the Bras D’Or Lake and then another 30nm to Baddeck in Cape Breton. Two days to provision and wait for weather in quaint and friendly Baddeck then further on 230 nm to Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

The 230nm bit between Baddeck and Wood’s Island (in the Bay of Islands close to Corner Brook, Newfoundland) required a bit too much engine and too little sail.  As such, we were extra delighted when the high cliffs of the coast came into sight on the morning of the 22nd. Bits of strong and stubborn snow still cling to the clifftops but the sun shone as we pulled into a little harbour, surrounded by sea birds, wooded hills and green fields and few small houses with small docks poking out into the bay, and 4 little fishing dinghies to complete the picture. Already feeling far away and peaceful.
